As if I haven’t touted my love for Google enough, they just released a new tool sure to excite rhetorical scholars even more: Google Audio Indexing. Basically, it indexes the audio of political speeches and searches the text for specific words.
It’s incredibly useful for someone such as myself who is looking to write a paper about presidential rhetoric on LGBT issues. I did a search for “gay” and got dozens of recent results. The top hit was “Michelle Obama Speaks to DNC Gay & Lesbian Leadership Council.” In the search result it lists that she says the word about 4 times and pulls the surrounding text from each instance and marks in the timeline of the speech where they occur for easy browsing. Holy crap, this is useful!
